A welcome from the President - Farazi Virk
Welcome to our Paediatric Society at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). I am very excited and honoured to be undertaking the role of President for this amazing society in its 9th year of activity.
The Paediatric Society is one of the most active societies at BSMS. Our main aim is to ensure there are a variety of opportunities available for Medical Students at BSMS and other institutions to get involved, participate and find out more about this unique specialty.
Our highlight event of the year is the National Student Paediatric Conference (NSPC) which we have proudly hosted since 2012. This year our conference ‘Shaping the Future of Paediatrics: A Day Discussing Paediatric Career Pathways’ will be held on 29th February 2020. We have a range of interesting speakers and interactive workshops confirmed, who are specialists in the world of Paediatrics allowing you to explore a career within this brilliant specialty. This is an event not to be missed and we look forward to seeing you there!
We are extremely grateful for generous sponsorship since our establishment and this has enabled the society to provide educational opportunities that support the student curriculum. Throughout the year we spend a lot of time fundraising for our chosen charities; Haydn’s Wish, Whoopsadaisy and Rockinghorse Children’s charity.
Our participation in the Europe-wide initiative Teddy Bear Hospital, which aims to prevent and combat “white coat syndrome” in young children has been enthusiastically received by local primary schools in the last few years. Each year we have a fantastic amount of student volunteers who deliver interactive sessions including raising awareness of asthma and allergy amongst children, inspired by the charitable work of Haydn’s Wish. This year we are launching PlayTeam at Royal Alexandra Children Hospital, a scheme aimed to help Play Therapists in their work with children in hospital and to provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills in engaging with ill children.
